Substantial Climate Response outside the Target Area in an Idealized Experiment of Regional Radiation Management

چکیده

Radiation management (RM) has been proposed as a conceivable climate engineering (CE) intervention to mitigate global warming. In this study, we used coupled model (MPI-ESM) with very idealized setup investigate the efficacy and risks of CE at local scale in space time (regional radiation management, RRM) assuming that cloud modification is technically possible. RM implemented by brightening low-level clouds (solar SRM) thinning cirrus (terrestrial TRM). The region chosen North America, simulated period 30 years. sustained resulted net radiative forcing −9.8 Wm−2 cooling −0.8 K. Surface temperature (SAT) extremes (90th 10th percentiles) show negative anomalies target region. However, substantial impacts were also outside area, warming Arctic pronounced precipitation change eastern Pacific. As variant RRM, targeted suppress heat waves (HW) was investigated further simulations implementing intermittent locally, prior HW situations. most cases, RRM results successful reduction temperatures substantially smaller area compared RRM.

Sensitivity of climate forcing and response to dust optical properties in an idealized model

[1] An idealized global climate model is used to explore the response of the climate to a wide range of dust radiative properties and dust layer heights. The top-of-the-atmosphere (TOA) shortwave forcing becomes more negative as the broadband shortwave single scattering albedo increases and the broadband shortwave asymmetry parameter decreases, but the sensitivity is highly dependent on the loc...
